Al Shifa Trust | General Information

Al-Shifa Trust was established in 1985. It is a non-governmental, non-political, charitable organization. President of Pakistan is the ex-officio Patron-In-Chief of the trust .The board of trustees comprises of retired service men, businessmen, bureaucrats and professionals.

The aims and objectives of the trust are prevention and control of blindness by providing standard and sustainable eye care services which are accessible and affordable, human resource development through training of doctors, nurses and paramedics and to establish facilities for research in ophthalmology.

The trust complex is situated 35 kilometers from the capital Islamabad on the outskirts of Rawalpindi alongside the Grand Trunk Road. It has four components i.e Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology, Al-Shifa Centre for Community Ophthalmology and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Sukkur. This completes the first phase of the master plan. In second phase one base hospital in NWFP and Baluchistan will be established.

Our Capital Cost has been Rs. 610 million ($12million) on these components. 75% of this has come from public donations from within Pakistan and abroad while 25% has been in the form of grants from different government sources. 75% of our patient care services are free, 20% pay at subsidized rates while only 5% pay the full cost of the treatment. Our recurrent cost is Rs. 120 million a year. 40% of it comes from donations, 35% is generated from hospital charges, while 25% is contributed through Zakat and other grants.

We acknowledge with thanks the participation of all our donors, individuals/ organizations, whose generous contribution has made it possible to build this hospital and its components and are continuously donating for the current running costs of the Trust. We also thank all our engineers and workers who have worked tirelessly to make this dream come true.
