The Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology with its main focus on human resource development and research has been completed at a cost of Rs. 50 million ($ One Million). The Institute seeks to supplement national efforts at training and research in the field of ophthalmology.
It is staffed with highly qualified and experienced specialists to conduct the activities in the field of training and research. Postgraduate training courses leading to fellowship and diploma in ophthalmology are already in progress. So far, 56 doctors have successfully completed post-graduate training in ophthalmology.
Keeping in view of the need for trained manpower in the country a national academy of paramedics has been established within the institute. This academy holds regular Diploma and Certificate Courses for Optometrists, Orthoptists, Instrument Technicians, Ophthalmic Technicians and Ophthalmic nurses. A total of 192 paramedics have been trained in these fields.
Other important features of the PIO are a well-equipped Library with unique collection of ophthalmic books and journals and Al Shifa research centre which is a unique facility in the country to promote ophthalmic research in Pakistan. Institute has all the modern teaching facilities like Audio Visual Projectors, over head projectors, Multimedia system and Computer facilities.
