Pakistan Institute Of Ophthalmology (PIO)

  • Trained over 200 doctors and over 800 paramedics
  • Recognized by PMDC, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Quad-e-Azam University and University of Health Sciences Lahore.

Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology (PIO) is the academic wing of Al- Shifa Trust Eye Hospital. Concept of PIO was evolved in 1992 to have own set up for human resource development and availability of trained manpower for the hospital.

Construction of PIO started in 1992 and was completed in 1994 at a cost of Rs.100 million. Formal inauguration was done on 25 Sep 1997 by then President of Pakistan Farooq Laghari

PIO is affiliated with:

  • Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) Islamabad for post graduation diploma courses in Ophthalmology
  • College of Physician and Surgeon Pakistan (FCPS)for post graduate FCPS Courses
  • University of Health Sciences (UHS)for graduate training in Optometry and Orthoptics
  • Punjab Medical Faculty for Ophthalmic Technology

PIO imparts training to postgraduate residents in ophthalmology including doctors, nurses, optometrists and ophthalmic technicians.

Training programs for doctors includes Fellowship FCPS, Sub Specialty Fellowship Program and Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery (DOMS)
